The coffee berry is red when ripe. This is just the outer skin though which is removed during processing to free the bean that is then roasted and ground to brew your favourite drink Coffee picking(harvesting) is done by hand. Very good and experienced coffee pickers will fill a whole sack - of about 5 - 20gal pails during the pick harvest season which is traditionally December in Kenya.
